It’s For the Birds! Plus a giveaway (now closed)

Hi! Welcome to the “It’s for the Birds” blog hop. Thanks to Mary and Madame Samm for organizing the hop! If you are new to my blog, I hope you will check out some of my other posts and tutorials. If you like what you find, you might want to subscribe to my blog to stay in touch.

I love birds, as you can probably tell from the name of my blog & studio. I have always been drawn to birds, feathers, nests, and egg imagery, and in grad school, I finally put words to this fascination: birds represent that dual pull I feel (and lots of people feel) of a longing to nest but a yearning for flight. This blog hop was the perfect reason to create something new with a bird theme.

The first project I made is a three-dimensional fabric & felt bird, based off of a pattern by Mummy Sam. I picked my favorite colors and had a ball making this bird. I did hand embroidered abstract feathers in a variegated floss of blues and greens on the white felt body, and the face is hand embroidered in charcoal grey floss.

Her coat is removable, made from grey felt with a button accent.

The back of her is two different fabrics I love (by Ellen Luckett Baker), stitched together into stripes.

bird7Her legs are a different fabric (from Monaluna’s Havana collection) torn into strips and wrapped around a wire base.

She, of course, is a sewing bird. I made her this little sewing machine (which is stuffed with dry beans so it stands),

a satchel for carrying her sewing things,

and a needle, button, and little stitching project of her own.

I am in love with this bird and have drawn a bunch of my own bird patterns to turn into 3-D sculptures.

I also made an appliqued bird wall hanging and a pin using a block I hand carved and printed:

Now for the giveaway:

I still have some charm squares of Nancy Drew fabric left from an earlier blog hop I did, so I thought I would share those with you, plus  some handmade beads and other goodies, all of which will arrive in this drawstring bag handprinted with one of my original bird blocks.

  1. I left an original comment about my favorite bird but it didn’t seem to take. . . I hope I am not duplicating it! I love the rose colored. Spoonbill and also hummingbirds!

Thanks for the chance to win this adorable birdie!

  2. I subscribe to your blog via email, but I have for awhile so I don’t know if I am eligible for a second entry!

  3. Hello sweetie! How kind of you to offer this giveaway. I love almost all birds, but I became fascinated with shore birds during a visit to Sanibel Island in FL years back. The rosette spoonbill is a gorgeous bird that I saw there for the first time. I also ador hummingbirds. Thanks for your kindness and for the chance to win!

    Hugs,
    Maureen

  4. Loooove your lil Lady bird….she is sooooo cute…and YOU are so very Creative!! Love her sewing things & all!! 🙂

I love Cardinals in the Winter..such bright spots in the snow! In summer, I looove the Hummingbirds! 🙂

  5. That is an amazing stitchin’ bird!! She was cute enough alone but with her sewing machine, project bag, etc., she just hopped to the top.

  6. My least favorite is the crow who uses my trailer on Sunday morning for a foot ball game. I do so love the humming bird. Your project turned out great and what a nice give away.

  7. Jennet. Awesome work on that little bird. Great accessories and you did lovely details. Thanks for sharing today. Love those beads you have made for the giveaway; sure to make someone very happy.

  10. I love that your little bird has her own stitching bag. How cute. My favorite bird is the cardinal.

  11. Your birds are adorable. Especially the sewing bird. Sew cute. I don’t have a favorite bird, I have about twenty or thirty. Love em all.

  12. I am a follower by email. I love cardinals. I grew up in WV whose state bird is the Cardinal. I now live in OK. My adult son loves the STL Cardinals. The other day I was talking to him on the phone and was thinking about his liking the Cards and I told him I saw a bright red Cardinal in my backyard. He thought that was really nice!! After I hung up, I realized the connection of the Cardinal! I’m a little slow!

  13. Oh, my~ she is ready to go to a sewing class – she has a carrying case for her sewing machine! She has her supplies in the case, too! Now talk about prepared. How adorable is this. I love the embroidered side and then the reverse side being coordinated fabric. This gal is just too, too, too smoking! The cape is adorable. Creativity is over the top. Thanks for participating and making the cogs in my brain whir and whir and whir. I had a delightful time visiting! I hope to see you in another hop very soon. You are very generous with your giveaway.

  14. Very pretty birdies! How cute that one of them has her own satchel with a sewing machine. Make me chuckle.

  15. I love all of your projects, the attention to detail is amazing and the pieces are so small. Thanks for sharing.

  16. Lovely work, your bird must have taken you ages to make. My favourite bird is the robin because it reminds me of christmas.

  17. That is just darling and I LOVE the cute bag she carries!!! I am loving my orioles in my yard at this time of the year.

  18. How wonderful! Your bird is all decked out with coat, machine and sewing satchel so what more would a girl need? Well done!

  19. I love all critters so I have no favorites. Right now a mama bird is taking care of her babies on my daughter’s front porch. The nest was in a wreath on the door and her hubby didn’t realize it had an egg in it. He took it off and when he saw the egg he put it on a bench on the porch. Mama came back and laid 3 more eggs and now has 3 babies with fuzz. (One didn’t survive.)

  20. I love your little bird. That is so awesome that she has a little miniature sewing machine and sewing bag.

  21. Also Jennet I wanted to let you know I was an e-mail follower. I love the Blue Heron who loves to fish in the river right behind the house. Thanks once again for the chacne to win that great prize package.

    Sincerely,
    Tricia

  22. I’m so impressed on the scale of your little birdies. They are a something to be proud of. Thank You for sharing for sharing them with us and for the chance to win such a fantastic prize.

    Sincerely,
    Tricia

  23. Wow, I am in awe of your handwork. Those teeny tiny pieces! Yikes. Your birds are just adorable, and I do have to say, probably the best dressed ones on the planet!

  24. I am watching a sparrow guard a bird house where she has a nest just outside my door as I write this. The chickadees that visit are “cuter” but I love watching the mama bird. Your three dimensional bird is wonderful, I love the detail. All of your projects are so creative. Thanks for sharing.

  25. So cute!
My favorite bird probably is a Robin because the first sign of them is the first sign of spring.

  30. I “like” you on Facebook, and I think I also am following your blog. I hope you make many more of the sculptured birds — this first one is stunning!
