Nature Reading

I went to my local, independent bookstore yesterday because I had a gift certificate to spend. I was hoping to pick up a Waldorf teaching book or two, but no luck. Instead, I looked at some of the nonfiction and poetry kids’ books they had and found a few really lovely ones that will be wonderful incorporated into lessons and projects with the wee one. I picked these because they can grow with him (parts of the books are too mature for him) but he will still find them interesting now because they have great illustrations.

I picked out one on clouds, one about trees, one about writing poetry (which is definitely too old for G but I couldn’t resist it)…

And this is my favorite…

Outside your window

Outside Your Window: A First Book of Nature by Nicola Davies. It has poems and short writings about nature, and the illustrations are phenomenal. The book is organized by season, so we can pull it out all year and enjoy. The book will connect to canning, gardening, composting, animals, the weather, and so much more. Here are just a couple of my favorite pages:

I knew it was meant to be and that this book should come home with us when I saw the dedication had my son’s name.

I know, I’m sappy.

  1. Isn’t is a HUGE part of being a Mom, when you go out to look for something for yourself but ultimately you spend the money on your children instead? hehe

    • So true, Holly! I also think leaving the house with plenty of stuff for the kid but forgetting to change out of slippers is another part! (That only happened once to me, but I often leave the house without the stuff I need, while I have enough provisions for the wee one for a month.)

  2. These books look great! I LOVE the illustrations in that last one, might have to pick it up for my boys. Thank you for sharing. Have a lovely weekend!
